Healthy Breakfast Recipe to Fuel Athletes

Ingredients

  • ½ cup oats

  • 3 tbs milk (any kind)

  • 1 tbs ground flax seed

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

  • ½ cup vanilla Greek yogurt

  • 8 whole frozen strawberries (1/2 cup sliced strawberries)

  • 1-2 tbs sliced almonds

  • wide mouth mason jars or other pint size containers with lids

Instructions

  1. Add oats to the Jar and then stir in the milk

  2. Layer the remaining ingredients except for the sliced almonds, then stir til everything is combined

  3. Put the lid on the jar and then put it in the refrigerator over night, or for at least 4 hours

  4. Remove from the fridge, add almonds, and enjoy!

Hot Chocolate Hikes

Kids and their guardians are invited to join Bridget and Rose Ferichs, a mother-daughter team, to explore Allerton park during the winter season. The hike will include a walk around a park, a hot chocolate stop (recommended to BYO reusable insulted cup), and a story around the campfire. This will be held on February 5th at 2 pm, meet at the McDonald Family Trailhead. There is a $5 fee per person (adults are free with a registered child) and registration is required.

“Take Care” Package Drive to Support LA Firefighters with PDHP and SaLT

The Park District of Highland Park is supporting the firefighters fighting the California forest fires in partnership with SaLT (Service and Learning Together) by creating “Take Care” packages. They are looking for the following items Chapstick, Liquid IV, Hand/Body Lotion, Socks, Healthy snacks, and hard candy. These items can be dropped off at the West Ridge Center (636 Ridge Road), Recreation Center of Highland Park (1207 Park Ave West), Deer Creek Racquet Club (701 Deer Creek Parkway), Centennial Ice Arena (3100 Trail Way). They are accepting donations until Sunday, February 9th.

The History Behind NIL

What is NIL? NIL stands for Name, Image, and Likeness and is associated with a college athletes ability to control and profit off of their identity. Before NIL college athletes spent long hours dedicated to their sport and to their studies with no options for them to get compensation. But several court cases brought up the injustice of this and caused NIL legislation to be put in place. In today’s blog post we will be looking at college sports before NIL, the court cases that led to NIL, and how college sports have changed with this new legislation.
